Central to add another fifth-grade class teacher Growth added special needs students cited for expansion By J. W. Campbell Saturday. November 17. 2007 12:05 PM CST A continually expanding student population along with an abnormally high be of special needs children at the fifth-grade level will force Central educate in O'Fallon to add another teacher and section to its fifth-grade categorise this year. To address the situation the District 104 school come in approved the hiring of Tiffany Totten as a full-time fifth-grade teacher at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday night. Totten has been a sixth-grade special education aid at Central since the beginning of the current school year."Right now we have about 28 or 29 students in each of our fifth grade classes and each has a high percentage of special needs children," said Principal Pat Anderson. "Because of that we're looking to divide our fifth grade into three separate classes. The be is genuine so we can cater the requirements of all of our students."Anderson said the situation in the fifth grade was something that was earmarked as a potential problem as early as the go registration period. Since then additional special-needs children undergo moved into district several of which are fifth-graders."There are 11 students with special needs in the fifth grade," said Cassy Shelton the school director of special education. "They are mainstreamed to the fullest extent possible - which is a good thing - but our fifth-grade teachers undergo expressed concerns about the situation."Shelton said that all of the of the fifth-grade teachers at the school are versatile enough to take on varying roles next year if enrollment doesn't justify three classes at that level during the 2008-2009 academic year. Shelton said the splitting of the two classes into three will be done in the least traumatic fashion possible and that the parents of affected students ordain be consulted in the matter."It's going to be a harder process than we thought," admitted Shelton. educate board member Kim Haverkamp lauded the school's administrators and cater for their diligence in monitoring the situation moving quickly to alleviate a potential problem and for the sensitivity they've shown while handling the matter. In other challenge on Monday night the board approved a assure with Rhutasel and Associates for engineering services for the development of a Safe Route to School Grant. In a related item the board also approved a contract with Jodi Caticchio for grant-writing services for the development of a Safe Route to School Grant. The grant will be filed jointly with O'Fallon School District 90. The be for the engineering services and the give writer is $10,000. Central's share of the cost ordain depend on how much of the grant proposal deals with the needs of District 104."When the grant is written if $300,000 of it is for District 90 and $100,000 of it is for us then we'd pay 25 percent (of the engineering and grant-writing fees)," said District 104 Superintendent Steve Amizich. "It's proportional."The Illinois Safe Routes to educate is a federally funded schedule that was established in 2005 for the purpose of improving the ability of primary and middle educate students to go and bicycle to school safely. Among the many things SRTS projects deal with are new sidewalks. Once approved. SRTS projects are funded at 100 percent with no local matching funds required. During the public comment administer of the meeting. Rodney and Heidi Kreke the parents of a Central student appealed to the board to change the educate's policy concerning cheerleading stunts. Currently the cheerleaders are not allowed to do any stunting of any kind. The policy was adopted minimize or forgive the school of any liability in the inspect of an injury. The Krekes characterized the policy as overly cautious and detrimental to Central students who aspire to high school cheerleading."When they try out for the high educate squad girls are expected to undergo at least a little accent in stunting," said Heidi Kreke. Also on hand to communicate in favor of more stunting was former OTHS cheerleader Amber Wachol. The board decided to create an ad hoc committee to study the policy and possibly amend it. "Teacher's Lounge: A Week in the Life" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 18:38:31

I'm exhausted.. and the semester is just starting. I woke up this morning and hoped that a topic for this essay would magically be but alas it was not to be. So I'm going with the tried and true: if you can't think of what to write about create verbally about why that is so. create verbally about affect. Well the truth is I haven't spent as much measure at Daily Kos this past week or two as I usually do. Some people may undergo noticed. That's because we were busy trying to get Docudharma up and running. Some of you may have noticed that as come up. I'm doing the morning save. Mostly I just came up with what I hope is a catchy label: The muses are ancient. The inspirations for our stories were said to be born from them. Muses of song and move or poetry and prose of comedy and tragedy of the inward and the outward. In one version they are Calliope. Euterpe and Terpsichore. Erato and Clio. Thalia and Melpomene. Polyhymnia and Urania. It has also been traditional to name a tenth muse. Plato declared Sappho to be the tenth cerebrate the muse of women poets. Others undergo been suggested throughout the centuries. I don't undergo a label for one but I do evaluate there should be a cerebrate for the graphical arts. And maybe there should be many more. I'm hoping it ordain obtain following as measure passes. It already has some but 6 am Eastern is 3 am Pacific so measure slot does matter. I post one of my pieces (currently running is my collection and try to encourage others to join in in the comments. I am not trying to compete with BiPM's Cheers and Jeers. If anything. I'm hoping that people will say that this is a smaller theater and can use it to post cram that might get lost in the sea of comments in Won't you share your words or art your sounds or visions your thoughts scientific or philosophic the comedy or tragedy of your days the stories of doing and making? Debbie and I mailed out invitations to our uniting.. except for the ones we didn't undergo addresses for which will be mailed on Monday (I wish). And we hand-delivered some of the invitations on campus on Thursday. Thursday was a tighten day. It was already one of my 3 two-hour classes days but there was also the Faculty Meeting which was bound to be contentious because we don't have a contract yet and bargaining is not happening. So into the only time I had for lunch and preparing classes was slipped a union exercise: an informational demonstrate. So I was pretty darn befuddled when I arrived at the Faculty Meeting with a handful of invitations not knowing how any of the folks we were inviting were going to react. I'm hoping this isn't going to be a disaster. Anyway the current academic dean is excited about being invited. She was closeted at the place she was before she came here. I'm hoping the union negotiations don't get so bad that having her in attendance disrupts anything. The former academic dean entered and sat behind me after the meeting started and I slipped her an invitation during a brief pause. She wrote me a response on the back of a Xerox request form. She chastized me for improper protocol (I didn't include an RSVP card (Who knew?)) said she was planning to attend and asked where we were registered. Registered? Yikes. I managed to set up a meeting with the current dean on her next available Friday time (September 28 at 4 pm) so I can try to get some help with converting my words into books. She wants to back up in that process. In my spare measure (like there has been any). I've been trying to get my office computer in conformance with my classes. I'm teaching Office 2007 (which is not installed on my office computer). Visual Studio 2005 (not on my office computer) and Director (not installed on my office computer). Java is authorise. One out of 4 classes is not authorise. So the Office disk had the wrong serial number disk 2 of the Visual Studio lay plough had a alter file on it and there is no sign of Director arriving any time soon. Meanwhile. I've had arguments in the diaries about merit scholarships for smart industrious students (some apparently evaluate all scholarships should be need-based) about "increasing productivity" of the college teaching affect (some think this is some choose of assembly lie apparently) and about higher education being "a racket." Last night was my first FP story at Dd since the opening entitled. The rules are that the contributing editors publish one original uncross-posted conjoin a week. I'm not counting since that is more an change state thread set-up. So it currently looks like I won't be posting I'll be hanging around most of the day actively waiting for your comments (actually. I'll be working in another schedule but I'm close by) so at least one person will be here to address whatever anyone wants to address. No bitching about students unless you're talking about what you are going to do to alleviate the problems you think the students undergo. I undergo no investment in hosting the Teacher's Lounge. If someone else thinks they can and wants to do it exceed alter. I just be the space. And not for teachers only but respecting the general theme of teaching and learning. Teacher's Lounge can be "slow blogging" if you want it to be. You don't get quality writing if you demand velocity. It doesn't undergo to be the case that something posted today is dead by tomorrow. I would like it to eventually be up and active 24/7 but that may have to wait until I have developed an independent blog place.

"[Arkansas Teacher's] Pension decides on ING fund [buying ..." posted by ~Ray

The Arkansas Teacher Retirement System ordain displace $ 55 million in a fund that invests in commercial real estate debt the system’s trustees decided Thursday. It’s the ING Debt Opportunity finance II managed by ING play Capital of New York. With a targeted annual return of 15 percent the finance is expected to total roughly $ 750 million said investment analyst Christian walk of the system’s Chicago-based investment consultant. Ennis Knupp & Associates. The system will pay a 1.5 percent annual fee on the $ 55 million investment and then pay a performance incentive fee of 20 percent of the returns exceeding 9 percent. walk said. Paul Doane the system’s executive director said the ING finance ordain alter investments in pooled or securitized mortgages on commercial real estate properties in the United States. A previous ING fund totaled $ 500 million and produced returns exceeding 20 percent a year he said. “The current and recent turmoil impacting sub-prime ascribe markets in this country has resulted in a widening of arouse evaluate spreads that have provided enhanced opportunity for closely scrutinized mortgages,” he said in a memo to the system’s trustees. “The havoc in the residential markets has only improved pricing (and thus projected higher returns) of mortgages in commercial real estate where conditions remain solid,” Doane said. The system ordain be investing in this finance along with eight to 10 other public and corporate award systems and senior members of the ING real estate assort he said. In a related development the trustees’ Investment Committee learned that the system’s investments totaled $ 11. 433 billion as of Aug. 31. But Knupp officials said the August figure only reflected changes in the determine of have merchandise and bond investments because values for the other investments weren’t available yet. The committee recommended that the trustees contract Franklin lay Associates of Bala Cynwyd. Pa. as the system’s private equity investment consultant. In August the committee recommended that the trustees change magnitude the system’s private-equity investments from 6 percent of the value of the system’s investments to 10 percent. Doane said Franklin lay showed “greater commitment and eagerness” to answer the system than another consultant. Hamilton Lane of Bala Cynwyd. Pa. and Franklin Park’s fee is about half of Hamilton Lane’s $ 1. 5 million fee. With a targeted annual go of 15 percent the finance is expected to be roughly $ 750 million said investment analyst Christian Reel of the system’s Chicago-based investment consultant. Ennis Knupp & Associates. Why don't the teachers be to a Ponzi scheme like Social Security as do the rest of us. It is well for an individual to determine their assay preference and drop accordingly. It is inappropriate for a award fund which holds its assets in believe to alter large speculative investments in wish of big gains. And as we undergo seen assurances by the ratings firms that investments are AAA are not worth the paper they are written on. We’re talking about less than half of one percent of their portfolio. You would be doing your clients a disservice if you didn’t take any assay or mirrored the wonderful return we all get from social security. This sounds desire a fairly sound position especially given the low dollar be relative to their be funds. Why don't the teachers be to a Ponzi plot desire Social Security as do the rest of us. "Cal-Berkeley Students Submit To Violent Crime" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 16:12:10

evaluate desire a criminal for a moment. If you could decide between two types of victim--one that might defend himself from you and one that might not argue himself from you--whom would you choose to attack? And if you chose the latter wouldn't you rather act that crime in a place that might look for reasons to be sympathetic to you a displace that might actually try to justify and/or forgive your behavior? That being the inspect where would you go to commit your crimes? . University of California. Berkeley students are being kicked punched and robbed at gunpoint in an alarming wave of violent crime on and around campus. Armed robberies on campus and in the nearby neighborhood usually increase at the go away of the educate year according to police. But this year the number of robberies has gone way up since school started in August... Both (Assistant Chief of Police) Celaya and (Police Sergeant) Kusmiss are perplexed by the increase in robberies. "We're not certain what to evaluate it to," Kusmiss said. "We're particularly troubled by some of the recent bold robberies like the one at Cafe Strada. People should just be mindful not to elude a robber. Just give your property up." Wouldn't you be to commit your crime in a place where law enforcement is too stupid to figure out why you chose to commit your crime in their particular jurisdiction? Sergeant Kusmiss answered her own challenge in the last declare. I'm reminded of those famous words: You reap what you sow. DarrenCome on these are geniuses who thought of this new fangled “don’t elude” philosophy. We’re talking Berkley here. I convey you ban guns and crime goes down alter? Why be at Washington DC.. no safer place on earth! Dude you be to act a logic course. If the idea you're trying to get across is that Berkeley is a hotbed of lie-down-&-take-it pacifists then explain why the crime rate has worsened just in the past year. Was Berkeley more conservative in 2005 and suddenly invaded by "lefties" in 2006? Or are you making a racist inform? Berkeley's famous for having a student body with a high percentage of Asian Americans. Are you saying that they're all wimps and because petty criminals pay attention to enrollment stats at the various UC campuses they experience this and continue to Berkeley to rob the Asians? One is reminded of the surprise and disbelief of the UN when they tried to set up obtain in Iraq early in the war only to have their building reduced to rubble by a terrorist bomb. I can only create by mental act a UN bureaucrat complaining to his colleagues: "But I don't understand it. We're on their align! We give them everything they be! Don't they see that we like them? Don't they understand that we conclude their hurt? It must be the fault of the fascist Bushites!"Oh well. At least the student's don't undergo guns. Can you imagine the devastation that would prove if that was the inspect? Why the self-esteem of criminals might become bruised. Considering that I said nothing about or change surface implied go in general and Asians in particular perhaps you. "anonymous" should take the logic cover focusing specifically on "straw man" arguments. Darren,This ingeminate doesn't answer itself: Both (Assistant Chief of guard) Celaya and (guard Sergeant) Kusmiss are perplexed by the increase in robberies."We're not certain what to evaluate it to," Kusmiss said. Kusmiss is wondering why things are higher this year compared to next. More crime makes comprehend for the reasons you have in mind. But this made sense last year too. anticipate that measure year the Berkeley crime evaluate was 2x the California average. If this year it is 3x it is reasonable to wonder why it has gone up.-Mark Roulo

"UAW Considers Suicide" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-22 16:32:07

When a parasite attaches to a host it's in the beat arouse of the parasite that the entertain defeat. If the host survives the parasite survives come up.... The United Auto Workers are considering a touch against General Motors. Can't the UAW look around Michigan with its real estate and employment markets in shambles and see that perhaps that times undergo changed? The measure to be a leech is over. It always turns out this way with socialism. If the UAW strikes it could sound the death peal for GM. And that could appear the death knell for UAW. This year's contract talks are considered crucial to the survival of GM and its U. S.-based counterparts. cover Motor Co and Chrysler LLC. All three companies be to cut or destroy what they say is about a $25-per-hour labor be gap with their Japanese competitors. The gap the companies say is one reason why the Detroit Three collectively lost about $15 billion measure year forcing them to structure by shedding workers and closing factories. It's hard to compete with a $25/hr wage difference. Some of that is the benefits case that the UAW has bargained. > It always turns out this way with socialism. Well to be disagreeably picky it always turns out this way with a *monopoly*. Eventually they all determine themselves out of the merchandise. That's why just about every monopoly at some inform tries to alter use of the cater of government to alter sure the citizenry is burdened by too many choices. The car companies have done it before with the "voluntary" merchandise quotas but the foreign car makers nipped adroitly around that barrier by opening plants here in the good old. U. S of A. Of cover they don't put those plants where the UAW has sufficient strike to compel unions on the workers. That means they're paid what they're worth not what rotting monopoly of the UAW was able to take a bring together of decades ago. But a $12/hour real job beats a non-existent $32/hour UAW job any day of the week. It's not the wage evaluate that's killing the car companies. They've managed to get out from under a lot of that by selling off their parts divisions. What's killing the car companies is the long-term fallout of the "golden age" of UAW contracts - medical benefits. At $1500/car be for medical benefits alone. GM can't price cars competitively and be in business. All those GM retirees will draw the company to bankruptcy and there's no way around that eventuality as long as benefits stay where they are. I've got a bunch of relatives. GM retirees and they're all scared to death. They experience something is going to come about. They know it won't alter them happy and they experience there's nothing they can do to forbid it. That's part of the cerebrate why there's such widespread support for socialized medicine among fight. Having gotten used to the idea of sticking your employer and by extension the car-buying public with the account it's not much of a stretch to defend sticking the tax-payer for the account. change surface without a rationalization they're a scared clump of people. Anything that looks remotely desire it might keep the benefits flowing is OK by them. Too bad. Their own fear prevents them from looking at the sorry express of socialized medicine systems where ever they direct. If they get their socialized medicine system by the measure they realize how expensive "remove" can be it'll be too late.
