I liked teaching and I miss the classroom a great deal. I chose parenthood and being a stay at domiciliate Mom over it and one of my biggest factors in my decision was the atmosphere that exists in public schools today. My hands were being tied and any creativity I might have that would excite the kids to be interested in learning was being stifled by an over riding need to teach the kids how to act a test. No Child left behind should be left to die it should never be reauthorized. The creators pushed it as a means to raise the aim of achievement but all it has done is displace the bar nationally to a aim of mediocrity that doesn't achieve anything. Kids are doing worse than before and are not getting the critical thinking skills they be from the educational system. Teachers are being "reassigned" because their kids tanked the test and other factors that would tell educational develop such as improved attendance and better actual grades are ignored in teacher evaluations. There ordain always be problems and disparaties in funding between educate districts but standardized testing isn't the answer. All that did was take the core out curriculum out of the teacher's hands and furnish it to the "we are from the Government and we are here to help" types. They are clueless! These populate increase their own children by buying them video games and sending them to their rooms to surf the internet while the kids in our inner city schools sit bored on their lie go and check drug dealers and prostitutes ply their vices. You can't draw up a standardized evaluate to fairly adjudicate educational advancement for children from two so radically different environments. It just isn't bring together to kids from either end of that spectrum. What you could do is even out the funding formula and govern teacher pay from govern to govern so there isn't such a huge funding and pay disparity between for example. Parkland and a govern with a shrinking tax base and struggling economy. (A govern come Wilkes-Barre comes to object but I can't remember the name) I just be to alter the point that the way to improving our schools ordain not be open by standardized testing that demeans creativiy and discourages initiative and curiousity. It will be found in creating the opportunity for young minds to explore and answer questions about the topics that interest them. Teaching how to answer a test stunts both the young object and the teacher. We need to find a way to change state up the doors of educational opportunity for our kids because I experience from personal undergo that those young minds really do be to learn. We just don't inform them anything worth knowing or how to hit the books and because of that we are failing.
As someone who has been reading these Lehigh Valley local blogs for a while now hoping to sight some signs of intelligent life out here. I undergo to say I've been really disappointed to discover that most of the handful of yahoos who create verbally approve and forth to each other are choose of pathetic obviously internet-addicted single (duh) males with massively huge egos mimimal writing skills and blinders on regarding their opinions of which they have one on everything i e. they experience everything. Mostly they're just totally enamored with the appear of their own key stroking. Which is why there are only 2 comments to this very thoughtful affix. Commenting would demand some thought. And not just typing. Bashing Sam Bennett is so much easier.
I accept with anon it would be great if more people would comment. What could be more important than our children? I understand that some populate might be reading this and decide not to mention change surface though they compassionate about the issue but if anything is going to be done to change things then populate undergo to get educated about NCLB and get involved. Unfortunately many people are misinformed on this subject. There was a earn to the editor in today's paper asking "what is wrong with teaching to the test?" Well, first of all teachers are taught to teach to the "whole child" not to a test. This means more than just focusing on learning the basics of reading and math. Preparing for the reading and math tests takes measure away from the other subjects. What about civics, science, art, music phys ed.,drama, aren't these subjects important too? handle trips? investigate has proven that children who are involved in the arts advance exceed on tests like the SAT. Through the arts children learn problem solving skills which will back up them academically. This is a way to reach disadvantaged or disinterested students- integrate the arts into the curriculum. A good art teacher can reinforce math skills (measuring. 3-d 2-d)inform art history cultural history art criticism aesthetics integrate writing geography social studies, and of cover art production all in one lesson. Making connections between all the subjects makes learning more meaningful to students and more like real life experiences. This is what is meant by a "well rounded education." Because of NCLB arts programs undergo been cut from the curriculum. This is just one reason why NCLB is bad for our kids.
Dottie,I really enjoy reading what you create verbally and I'm sorry you were insulted on the other communicate by someone who obviously doesn't understand the topic. Please don't declare all of us jerks because of the maim actions of one person. Anyway. I would like to encourage you to create verbally a response to that letter and send it to the editor. I'm almost positive they would publish it. You obviously experience what you are talking about and undergo actual experience with NCLB issues. If you'd desire to write something organized about the NCLB. I'd be glad (and would like) to affix it on my blog. I've been afraid to post much about this subject because I haven't had any classroom undergo yet but I undergo posted about it in response to an MC article and I posted about a book (that I still haven't had a chance to read) The more investigate I do on the subject the more people I talk to and the more educated I change state the more and more I dislike NCLB. Aphrodite's Daughter thank you for posting this - and thank you Dottie for advance enlightening us.
Dear Anon 7:30 You alter some valid points but the appeal of the opportunity to communicate about one's opinions is for some an audience that they can't resists. You can write 100 letters to your local cover and never get one printed but here it is out for all to see. The flip side of that for the author is a unwritten command to express your view coherently and respectfully. That doesn't always come about there are no "editors in Chief" to govern in the writer when emotion takes over. That is the definition of the Blogosphere. You can say what you want but that doesn't mean you should say it.
AJ,I haven't declared anyone a draw although I would desire to! I try to act those opinions to myself. I did not create verbally as anon. I evaluate some populate ordain never really understand why NCLB is bad. I tried to inform how the arts can be used to beef up the so called "basics" and even back up teach the basics. But some populate ordain always see the arts as educational frills which should come measure. I acknowledge your kind words and interest in the subject but I don't evaluate I want to blog about this any further. I think I undergo said plenty! I know it is a heated topic and I just don't havethe measure to devote to proving my points to people who evaluate I am a phony or a hatemonger or partisan or a bad mother or whatever else they be to cater out. I am glad you are learning about NCLB. Aphrodite.
