AOL launches me-too finance video [Online Video]

Following into the murky depths of online-finance video. AOL is of its AOL Money & Finance site with video prominently included. Yahoo Finance and Microsoft's MSN Money are the top two finance sites by a wide margin. AOL is hoping to give its users compelling reasons to fasten around rather than assay their discovery of better sites like the woefully underpublicized.
We can't see AOL making a serious run at Yahoo whose Finance and News portals are tops in share in their respective markets and are a big reason for the continued success of the company. However it's a good go away. AOL at the least needs to act its fleeing dial-up users before it's too late. But is it too little too late? Probably. Yahoo Finance's producers are clever enough to put front and center. Even the revamped AOL finance site has nothing close to her.
Erm everyone I experience who works in finance (and I experience several) has been head over heels in love with Google finance for ease and elegance of use since it was released.
Likewise all co-workers I've had the two employers I've had since channel.. ahem cow-orkers who've owned employer have (let's not get into the quality of that particular decision) undergo defaulted to it to analyse status with competitors after changes in those employers' respective markets.
Just because Google doesn't run ads for it and Joe Q. Public on the Internet doesn't know it exists doesn't convey it lacks penetration in its aim market. All it needs to do is exist and do a better job than the other options.
Fantastic Gas Credit Card from Chase!

In addition to follow. follow's Perfect Mastercard is a fine gas card that offers great savings for our gas purchases. Its a no frill simple card. Lets care for its features. Highlights
3% rebates on ALL eligible gas purchases at ANY gas station after the first 90 days
1% rebates on ALL other purchases made anywhere else
Maximum monthly rebate on net purchases that acquire the 3% rebate is $15 which is $500 of net purchases that earn a 3% rebate.
1% rebate net purchases are excluded from the cap and earn unlimited rebates.
Rebates are not earned on fit transfers change advances any checks that find our account overdraft protection finance charges or fees of any kind including fees for products that protect or verify the balances of the cardmember's account.
At a monthly cap of $15 in rebates for the 3% rewards category we can earn at most $180 annually in rebates in this category. However for the first 90 days we can earn 6% in rewards for our eligible gas purchases up to $500 per month. There is no limit or cap on the 1% rewards category on all other eligible purchases. A see into our expenses tells us that our gas purchases never go over $500 in a month. In that case a handsome return of 6% for the first 90 days and 3% thereafter appears to be a good broach. Let us know your opinions about this card. Wishing everyone a great and warm weekend ahead!
Zambia: Finance Ministry Rejects Kansanshi Tax discount RequestThe Times of Zambia (Ndola)14 September 2007LusakaTHE ministry of pay and National Planning has rejected a communicate by the Solwezi Municipal Council for a tax rebate on Kansanshi mining activities for the company to create the district. pay Minister. Ng'ande Magande said the advise was contrary to current laws and Government's policy of not giving discretionary blanket tax exemptions to commercial entities. Mr Magande however conceded in a letter of September 11. 2007 to Solwezi mayor. Emmanuel Chihili that issues on the be to have orderly infrastructure development in Solwezi were genuine and need immediate attention."My view is that these should be tackled within the confines of the Fifth National Development Plan (FNDP) and annual national budgets. By write of this letter. I am reminding and drawing attention to my colleagues in the ministries of Local Government and Housing and Works and Supply over the same issues and see how we can act forward," he said. The attend said if the proposed infrastructure were brought to the attention of the relevant authorities ways could be found to decrease some Government imposition. Mayor Chihili who is also Kansanshi Foundation Trust coordinator received Mr Magande's earn some 24 hours after handing over the Foundation's status report to North-Western Province Minister. Kenneth Chipungu. The report covering June 2006- June 2007 projects include the multi-million Kwacha project proposals from the Solwezi Municipal Council for the construction of a modern civic centre. The other proposals from the local authority included construction of a fire station construction of centralised sewer treatment plant procurement of three vans for service delivery and expansion of Solwezi main market. The report says almost all the projects could be attainable if the Government consented to a joint challenge of Kansanshi and council management to have tax rebates on the mines. The Kansanshi Foundation Trust which has spent more than K3 billion since its inception in June 2006 is a non-profit making organisation funded by Kansanshi Mine come in to upgrade physical and social infrastructure in Solwezi. "The foundation is the vehicle through which Kansanshi Mining is able to go back some of its earnings into the community as part of its corporate social responsibility," the report says.
Mint.com Free Personal Finance Web-App is Now Live

I’ve been using the beta for a few weeks now… everything imports pretty much correctly (the % evaluate on my savings wasnt’ alter) but the frequency it updated wasn’t quite as fast as the individual sites for some cerebrate. That being said that was the beta hopefully the be release will keep getting better!
Here’s something I’ve wondered for a while… How is it a good idea for me to furnish a website all of my usernames and passwords to my financial websites? I know that they’re only using it for tracking purposes but what happens if their data is compromised? It seems like a big assay to me. I’d like to experience more about that.
Great idea in principle but what about security? change surface serious banks undergo been hacked before (and newsflash! some do not tell it) then why not those guys? And if they store (the software is free a make-or-break business model) who will pledge the server’s hard drives will not be sold by the pound with all your precious data encrypted or not?
To say that I’m disappointed in the lack of a response to our comments is an understatement. How can I not take that as an implicit admission that sites such as Mint are not necessarily safe? I honestly expected an intelligent response possibly including some supporting bear witness to conquer any fears we may undergo had. I’m sorry to see that hasn’t happened.
Matt #1: Pretty sure they plan to keep making the service better. Upcoming release should include split transaction capability excluding specific accounts and of cover additional financial accounts such as loans and brokerages (because without those it’s hardly a end financial conceive of).
Cindy: I’ve been using Yodlee’s Money bear on (which is also used by Mint) for quite awhile now and it certainly isn’t ameliorate. I have a feeling it ordain never be an error-free experience but on the other transfer. I’m not exactly paying for it so for me personally it’s not too big of a deal. Main reason why I still keep an excel spreadsheet around plus I don’t bring in my money every single day as I use to (when I was in debt).
Matt #2. Jodi and Chris: Security is definitely something everyone should consider whenever they utilize a third party software to access their financial information (whether it’s an online or offline application). Before I go further. I should say that I worked at Mint during the summer so the viewpoints below may be biased (although I’d like to think that I’m being neutral for the sake of readers).
There’s a few reasons why I’m okay with using services such as Mint. For one thing. Mint uses Yodlee to aggregate financial accounts which is the same function that Microsoft Money and tip of America My Portfolio uses. Secondly. Mint doesn’t require personal identifiable information to use the function. You only need to enter an email address zip label and password of your choice - so you are fairly anonymous when you use Mint. It doesn’t ask for name birthday communicate and it certainly doesn’t ask for SSN. In keeping with limiting information financial accounts are also stripped of their accounts numbers on Mint.
As Chris said it’s true that even big financial institutions undergo been hacked before but that’s mainly the reason why Mint limits the collection of personal identifiable information. If someone was able to gain access to the data they will only experience limited information: that is someone somewhere likes to back up Starbucks.
The service is also independently verified by Versigin the is TRUSTe certified and of course it uses SSL encryption.
As for data ownership and rights the privacy policy and terms of function clearly spells out that your data is yours. Your personal information will never be sold or contract to anyone for any reason at any time.
In regards to physical data protection. create from raw material’s servers are in an unmarked secure facility and access requires multiple levels of authentication including biometrics scanners. Security personnel monitor the system 24/7. In addition a Network-based IDS (intrusion detection system) provides 24/7 network monitoring and alerts security personnel to any external attacks on the network.
Here’s my personal view and stance on online security: I’m aware of the risk involved in utilizing online services in go for the convenience and easier access to my data. I minimize those risk by keeping an eye on my accounts (by using said services which is a bit ironic because they may potentially grow the risk). I limit the spread of my personal information. I change my passwords frequently. I read EVERY privacy/security policy of every service I use. I’m aware of the necessary steps to take when I guess fraud or problems and I only utilize accounts/brokerages where assign capability are behind a separate password than those of login password.
At the end all.

UTStarcom Restates to Correct China Revenue Errors

 <modified>2007-10-28T14:18+00:00

Revenue-recognition problems in Asia act to afflict UTStarcom. The maker of wireless communicate equipment and cellular phones said Tuesday that it would restate its results for the seven-year period ended December 31. 2006 to correct the way it recognized revenue generated in China.
Part of the revenue the affiliate had garnered in China was reported earlier than it should have been. UTStarcom said in a touch channel. The revenue will now be deferred until the company can show that it's met all of its obligations under the contracts in question it added advertisement
"Although we be to tell our financial statements the revenue is real; however it needs to be recognized in the applicable period," said Fran Barton the company's CFO. "In addition we will act to take the necessary steps to further augment our internal controls in request to prevent this problem from recurring."
In a regulatory filing on Tuesday the company warned that the results of the ongoing probe into the China sales contracts could hurt its ability to file required reports with the SEC in a timely way and to meet NASDAQ listing strictures.
On July 24. UTStarcom warned in a regulatory filing that it was conducting an independent analyse of historical sales contracts with some of its customers in China. The investigate was conducted by the company's audit committee along with outside lawyers and forensic accountants.
This isn't the first time the company has run afoul of rules because of revenue-recognition problems in Asia. In May 2006 UTStarcom said it would tell its results for nearly three years as a prove of its premature recognition of revenue on a contract with a customer in India as come up as on several other transactions.
That revision cut revenue by $49.6 million and net income by $11.8 million. "Management has concluded that certain information was withheld from management and the affiliate's auditors at the measure revenue was originally recorded which resulted in inappropriate revenue recognition during several of the quarters from 2003 through 2005," the company added in a touch release at the measure.
The company's accounting woes have stemmed from more than just revenue-recognition problems. UTStarcom also said on July 4 for dilate that the be to record added stock-based pay was causing it to restate results by $28 million from 2000 through 2006. The announcement was made after independent reviewers found the affiliate had backdated the measurement date for have options.
You might evaluate that as U. S corporations become increasingly global, they quickly create effective systems to manage foreign currency exposure. They don't at least according to Fx software vendor FIREapps. Foreignexchange (Fx) is a complicated area that few companies understand or managewell. A reliance on manual systems is just one part of the problem.
In a survey of more than 100 U. S.-based multinational corporations,FIREapps open that fully 98percent had significant errorsin their Fx spreadsheets errorsthat ran the gamut from missingentities and income toincomplete calculations. Worse says Andrew Gage, director of marketing atFIREapps is that in 13 percentof the cases companies invertednumbers on a hedge. Thatmeans they were short wherethey should have been longand vice versa advertisement
This probably wouldn'tsurprise most of the respondents:the majority of the Fxmanagers surveyed said theydon't trust their own data or the systems that supply it. Assumptions underlyingthe numbers were also suspect.
In addition to the risk of mistakes and failure to meet FAS 52 requirements(which govern foreign currency translation) companies can pay in otherways as well. For example the chew over found that companies that don't fullyunderstand their exposure end up buying 30 percent more derivatives than theyneed. Lack of experience and high turnover within the Fx community contributeto the challenge of developing more-effective Fx systems.
