Granted. I undergo way too much time on my hands. With that said. I recently found myself wandering approve in time. In particular. I wondered what the local running scene looked desire ten years ago compared to now. So thanks to coolrunning com. I took a trip back to 1997. Here's what I open. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN ― There were a lot of races in 1997 that we haven't heard from in years. Some of my favorites: Miltner's Shoe 5K. Rochester; Fred Hackett 10K. agree; Seaside Seatride. Rye; Heart To Heart 5K. Manchester; NHPTV 5K. Durham; and Nute continue Half Marathon. Farmington. A few of the deceased stand out. The Foster's High Five sponsored by this newspaper joined forces with the Academic Achievers 5K. Dover River Run. Flatfoot Four Miler. Paws create Four Miler and Red's apparel Barn combined for the Dover Series. Red's is the only one of the left. There was also a series that involved a go in agree. In 1997 Tufts Health intend wanted to grow beyond Massachusetts and started a series of 5K's in other New England states. One of the stops was agree in June. 1997. The organizers treated the race desire they treat the Tufts Health Plan 10K a race that attracts thousands. There were huge signs a baggage affirm area and all the bells and whistles of a study event. It seemed a bit much for the 116 runners and walkers who showed up. A few years later Tufts Health intend pulled out of New England and the series was gone. And who can ever drop the move Fling 5K who's race director had an interesting idea. She organized other 5K's to go with move throw and formed a series. The idea was to award prizes for participants who completed the series. Not a bad idea. A special mention also goes to the Riverwood's know's 5K a race for 40 and over. Never caught on but a nice effort by the organizers. I REMEMBER YOU ― Two of the top five females at the 1997 Red's race were Susannah Landreth and Terri Morrisee. Karen Tripp also finished in the top five. Kathy Northrop won a lot of age assort awards and Rebecca Butler was one of my choices for top female of the year. On the men's side. Mohammed and Moatacim Hamcha had a strong presence. Russ Northrop was winning as many awards as his wife. Michael Dubois was running strong. Jim Moore always figured in the top ten and David Birse ran everywhere. Let's not forget Michael and Lisa Brady. They were one of the top husband/wife running teams in N. H. When was the measure time you saw any of these people at a local go?YOU'RE STILL HERE? ― On the other hand some of our top runners overall and in age groups in 1997 were Mike O'Brien. Dan Verrington. Dave Dunham. Ken Houle. Scott Clark. Liz Mooney-Arcieri. Laurie Gaudreau and Christine Snow-Reaser. Janet Parkinson and Diane Levesque battled for awards in their age groups. Wilson Perez was barely out of high school when he won the Stratham SPCA 5K. Ten years later and they comfort undergo a major presence although Perez graduated from college a few years ago. NOT change surface BORN ― Among the state's largest races this year will be the Big Lake Half-marathon. Runner's Alley/Red fasten 5K and Rock N Race 5K all with over 1,000 finishers. None were around in 1997. In fact the only races with over 1,000 finishers in 1997 were the merchandise form Day 10K and Cigna Healthcare 5K which was the Healthsource 5K approve then. RRCA SERIES ― The N. H. Grand Prix series fell under the umbrella of the Road Runner's Club of America. The series hasn't been affiliated with RRCA in years. Some of the clubs participating included the Lake Sunapee Road Runners and unify Northeast. The Coastal Athletic Association hadn't been formed. And that's the way it was in 1997Running shorts: work weekend in the Seacoast next weekend. There's the UNH Homecoming 5K in Durham and Bridges Four Friendship 10K in Portsmouth on Saturday. The Hannah Jackson 5K takes place in York. Maine on Sunday. Congrats to Sin Kounlasa of Dover. She set a state record for females 50 and over at the Clarence Demar Marathon…Triathletes rest by. There is going to be a big announcement in the next week or so about a new event coming to the Seacoast. Sorry. I am sworn to secrecy for now…The Eliot Festival Day 5K in Eliot.
